Outdoor Animal Control - Mole damage to lilies

I am in the process of transplanting and dividing some lilies and would like to know what I can do to prevent or at least discourage moles from damaging the plants in the future. Any help will be appreciated.....

Moles are carnivores. They eat grubs, worms, etc. Voles are herbivores. They eat vegetation and especially love lilies. To protect prize plants from voles, dig a 12" deep hole and bend a piece of metal hardware cloth about 12" wide into a circle and slip into the hole. Backfill hole and plant lilies. This will provide a barrier through voles cannot travel. The hardware can be placed as a barrier between a flower bed and lawn to exclude voles.

Thanks for your definition of "moles" & "voles", twelvepole. I will try the solution you suggested. Am I correct in assuming there is no horizontal bottom to the ring of metal hardware cloth, just a vertical wall surounding the plant?

No bottom. It's just a cylinder of metal hardware cloth.
