My ac was working fine accept it some times would not cut off anless you tapped the thermostat..I tapped it to shut it down and now it will not kick on,you can here it try but will not blow..It hums but will not work,is it froze up or an internal shut overload?

could be your thermostat is due for replacement
i replace lots of mercury type with digitsl and solve the problem

Could be many things. Is it the inside fan that hums? Did you try turning the blower wheel by hand with power off? Did it turn easily? Does the outside condensor come on?
