What in your opinion is the best way to solve this problem. I have a central air conditioner in my house that always cools the downstairs more than the upstairs. The thermostat is located upstairs so we usually make the downstairs 65 degrees while the upstairs is around 80 degrees when it is on in hot weather. I cannot really close the downstairs vents either cause the unit has this tendency to turn into a big ice cube if there isn't alot of vents open and even if it didn't turn into a ice cube I don't think it would work well. What I would like to do is install a wall unit air conditioner upstairs in the wall at the farthest corner from the staircase so it doesn't drift downstairs (the staircase and the mainroom upstairs are in the same room probably why this is a problem in my house cause all that cold air tends to drift downstairs here). This unit has its own thermostat on it and I would like to move the central air thermostat to downstairs so the central air conditioner can control the downstairs while this large wall unit can control the upstairs. Is this a good idea. Thank you

Out of the box here. But Id get some one to look at the duct work you have and rework it. This is better than another unit in there.

The house has always gotten cooler downstairs far more than upstairs but I just replaced the old unit with a new one last summer. They sized it and placed it in and know that it freezes up they really don't know why it is doing this too me. They checked everything out and nothing. If they do rework the ductwork and add more ducts I am sure that they will have to run it along the wall of which will lower the ceiling. It looks like the ductwork and ac unit was installed post construction of the house also. The cost of that will be alot I imagine. Thank you.
