Previous- I have a dining room table that had been refinished locally and the finish had started chipping off to bare veneer (4 large sections and 3 inch trim on edges).
Plan strip table and take it to bare wood and then refinish with wipe on oil stain in early am then polyurethane finish in gloss.

Stripped it down last night and wiped it down with laquesr thinner when finished. The problem that is see is the finish is blochy where the finish had chipped looking more like bare wood there while the other areas have a little more color left into the wood. I have one small raised spot from probably water about 2 inches.

WHAT is the best way to even this finish out? I realize that I need to sand the raised spot.

WHAT is the best way to get the rest of the veneer to lose the blotchy appearance from the damage.
1. Restrip again to try to even the color?

2. Sand with ?? to try get it even? Prefer not to try to have to sand the whole table other than to clean up the surface. Seems serious sanding could ruin the surface for a beginner without a lot of patience? ;)

On the poly for a diy’er in gloss are you better off wiping this finish on or using a bursh to get the best finish? Guy at the piant store said you could wipe it on better with a lint free rag but… (I will ask the experts).

I figure three coats of poly. What is the best to sand in between? S wool in ? size or sand paper on soft hand block in ?? grit?

Thanks,

Jim

could it be that the areas that had finished "chipped" off
were bleached by the sun?
if so, maybe try to bleach the whole table top.
rinse with water then sand 220
the area that you said was raised, can you push it
back down with your finger?
if so, use a srynge and inject glue under it and clamp it.
if you can not push it back down. what is the
wood under the veneer? is it wood or particle board?
if you try to sand the bubble you most likely will just
sand through it.
if you do not have access to a srynge, then use a safety
blade and cut through the bubble and get some glue
through the cut under the veneer and clamp
as to finish.
apply two thin coats with a brush.
then sand with 220.and tack after sanding.
apply a third coat
sand with 320, tack.
your last coat thin your poly 30 percent.
hope you have a dust free area.
remember poly is flammable.

Not sure what happened to the surface. Striped down and about ready for stain.
Figure That the guy that did it did not do that good of a job because the leafs are still in good shape.

Table was not in the sun light. Looks more like fluid got under or thru the finish and it started seperating from the wood.
