I had some old, used redwood from a friend's old fence, and used it to build skirting (mobile home) and a small fence (the skirting and a short divider fence are redwood lattice, plus about an 8 ft. fence section...all are from his old fence). I just sprayed it with an oil-base stain. However, I'm doing a bunch of other things. Would I be OK to just leave it at that for this winter, then apply a waterproofing next summer, or do I really need to waterproof it right now? Thanks for any thoughts.....

Basically stain is a "waterproofer" with color [pigment]
Paint gives the most protection, then stain with a clear waterproofer giving the least amount of protection. Your oil base stain should be fine, recoat when it begins to show signs of wear.
I assume you used exterior stain and not an interior stain which won't last long outside.

Yeah, Mark, it's exterior. When I watered last night the water just beaded up and rolled off, so I think I'm OK for the winter. Next summer I'll probably put a waterproof coating on it. Anyhow, thanks for the thoughts :)
