My factory Nissan car radio produces terrible static while I am turning the volume knob. I assume it is dirt on the contacts. I understand that I can buy a spray can of contact cleaner, and it looks like there is some access to the internals of the volume control.

Does anyone have any experience with this cleaner, and do you think it will fix my problem?

Update: A radio repair shop said not to use the over-the-counter sprays because they are so cold that they can crack some devices. Because I have the radio out of the car he quoted me $20 to clean the reostat, but said he had no way to test it.
