I have an area of my lawn that I need to sod or reseed this fall. What thickness of topsoil must I have for the grass to grow properly? The topsoil, if you call it that, in that area is not very good, is clayey, and is prone to crabgrass growing from it. I would like to replace it and get a good lawn in that area.

The crabgrass has nothing to do with the soil and bringing in more dirt will bring in more weeds. Clay soil is not necessarily bad, it's just prone to compaction and needs occasional core aeration. If you need more soil for the grade you want, great. Otherwise, I get a soil test and add any ammendments necessary, then rototil it all together.
