The drain pump works great and drains fast.
At the end of the drain cycle you can first hear the pump suck air before it shuts off.
But starting last week there is still some water in the bottom of the basket (a top loader) just at or slightly below the bottom holes in the basket. It is as though the drain hole is above the normal bottom of the normal location.

What can cause this?

It is a 3 year old GE top loader.

So your saying you open the lid and you can see water in basket.. Also need a model number from behind console...

Yes - just at the level of the holes in the bottom of the basket.

How high up above your washing machine does your drain line go?

Does it drain into a stand pipe or into the laundry tub?

Have you actually watched it drain out?...or do yo simply return to the washer later and see water down inside?

About level with the top of the machine.

Does it drain into a stand pipe or into the laundry tub?

I guess the answer is stand pipe. It goes into the public sewer system.

Have you actually watched it drain out?...or do yo simply return to the washer later and see water down inside?

Yes - I can fill it with water and watch it drain it all out "rapidly"
then suck air and shut off but there is still some water in the bottom of the tub at that time.

As I said.
The pump works great and the drain is OK - it is just quiting too soon. It is as though the drain hole is above the level of water that is left? I have no idea where the drain actually is as I haven't had it apart.

There is a space between the bottom of the basket (the tub that has holes in the sides and bottom, where you put your clothes)...and the outer tub which is what holds the water. (Obviously the basket can't hold water because it has holes in it. :) ) I can't recall what that space is but it is something of substance...not fractional. It may be a couple inches or so.

You don't see all the water pump out, and then resurface some after it stops? The reason I ask this is that if it did, then that would be like a backwash effect of the water in the drian pipe that is to the top of the washer draining back into the machine.

But if you can stand there and watch the water quickly pump it's way down, only to the bottom of the basket, and stop, just like that...with no backwash water rushing back in...then it sounds like the timer is advancing before you would want it to. Hmmmm.

Does your machine allow you to chose different water level settings? If so, will this even occur when it is set to the lowest setting?
