Try helping it along when you put the tape gently push it as the machine takes it.sometimes that helps as the tape goes in on a angle instead of correctly

Depending on how old or new this vcr is turn it over. There should be a metal plate held in place with a bunch of screws.Remove the screws and the plate and see if theres any belts visible. If not you will have to remove the top cover of the vcr and the front face plate and remove the internal workings by lifting up.Nothing will fall off so its not as hard as it sounds just tricky.Carefull not to do more damage and make sure its unpluged. Also look for any stripped gears. Also look for any broken belts. If everthing is working then It could be a sensor and thats a pain to replace.
