I have a 220 brush type fan than injects air into my hot tub. The brushes need to be replaced. Do i need to clean the contracts on the armature?? And if so, what is the best method? Also, why would one of the brushes have completely worn down when the other has 80% of its original length. Neither have aver been replaced before.

The armature probably is already polished clean by the brushes.

Maybe one of the brush springs was applying more pressure.

Thanks for the advice. I did clean the contacts on the armature with some contact cleaner and put it together earlier today. Works like new.

If you actually cleaned something...perhaps what you may have cleaned to improve the situation... was to get rid of the carbon that may have filled the insulating grooves inthe armature's commutator. Each 'tang' on the commutator, where the copper wires are welded one by one around the armatures perimeter, are separated by a gap so that the current flow has to go through one tang at a time and then through the corresponding windings around the armature's laminates (like those laminates of steel how Master locks are made),... and when the current is applied at the brushes into one section of commutator on the armature, that this starts the motor spinning, and then the brushes contact a new section of comutator...etc. So maybe your cleaning did indeed do something.

Oddly though, I have worn out many vacuum cleaners from my use in rentals and have had to have every part inside replaced, including brushes and armatures. Yet *I* have never had a case where I got my motor to work by cleaning the...I'm guessing...the comutator. But, if it worked for you, that is all that matters. And I'm glad you posted back yor results.

DaVeBoy,

Whoops, I didn't make my cure clear. One of the brushes was totally gone. I replaced both, but was interested in cleaning up the commutator - mainly because I overdo everything. The blower now works like new - due to the new brushes, but I'll also sleep well tonight knowing I made some lame effort to clean up the armature.
