The house we're in contract with has a fireplace on a wall that has a 2 story peaked ceiling with one of the ugliest polished brass fireplace surrounds I've ever seen.
Any ideas on how to alter the appearance of the polished brass without breaking the bank would be appreciated.

Not sure what the term "contracted" means. Rental? If so, make sure you have permission to change it. I would suggest you look at fireplace surrounds and see if any appeal to your taste. There are many faux finishes (coverings) that can be installed for reasonable amounts of money. Good luck.

Sorry, I forgot--New York State is the only state in which lawyers MUST handle the sale of real estate. We're in contract to BUY the house.
When we move in I'd like to change the finish of the fireplace. It's not exactly the surround, as in a brick wall or mantle (but there is a stacked stone base I can live with). I think it is part of the front face of the fireplace itself. Is it possible to redo the bright polished brass for something else?

Since cost is an issue, I would look for something you like and see if it can replace the brass. Replacement of the current material may be an option. Check and see if this part is attached with screws that you could remove. I know they make different styles such as brushed brass.

I love this website--I've been using it for years. You have no idea how appreciated your help and advice has been to me on more than one forum. You guys are really great!
Thanks, another thing to add to the checklist on the final walk thru.

You do not indicate that you dislike the style of the fireplace surround, just the polished brass. An inexpensive alternative would be, if planning on using the fireplace, is to paint it with heat resistant black paint.
