Every water supply pipe and waste vent have been replaced in my whole house (late 40's built) except for the vent in the bathroom. While The wet wall is still open should I go ahead and replace it as well? It has a rubber cuppling to ABS just below floor level in a crawl space and clear through roof with no physical means of support other than 1.5 " galvanize pipe that run horizontal for a tub vent that is short and rests on notches in stud wall. The 3'' pipe with the bell measures over 5" and it is stuffed into a 2x4 plaster wall:confused:. Because of the wall magic I will still have to fur out the wall, so yes or no on removal?
It is boxed in by wall studs and may a challenge cutting or breaking out with out wall damge on oposite wall but I think that can be done.

You didn't say why the rest of the house piping was replaced. Leaking or just done during a remodel? If the cast iron is not leaking, I would leave it alone. If you remove it, how far downstream do you plan on replacing it? If this is just for peace of mind, you can remove it and use a No-Hub coupling in the crawlspace to convert to ABS. This way, if you ever have to replace the main drain, you won't have to re-enter the wall. Good luck.

Peace of mind I guess would be the reason now. When I added on to the house some years ago I had replaced all of the drain waste to where it exits the foundation, no problems just thought it was the thing to do. Now I am wondering and would be replacing it for the same reason. What a PIA it will be because of the wall. It serve as only the vent for that bathroom. Even with 3" ABS I will need to fur the wall out. What about using 2" but the way they bowed the wall I still need to fur out the wall to even it up. It is time for the wall, I believe I will just leave well enough alone.
Thanks

Well what a job but I did replace the cast iron vent stack. Wasn't as hard to cut and break as I thought it would be but still a chore. Went with 2" ABS called the city building dept and they verified and calulated that it was of acceptable size and that mystery wall will be easier to finish now everything fits inside the 2x4 wall.
Now I can say every bit of plumbing has been replaced in the house.
