I noticed today that one of my units keeps turning off about every hour. Stays off for about 10 mins then runs again for another hour or so. When I say turns off I mean the entire system ,inside and outside. The only thing I have noticed is that the unit that turns off the fan outside is hot!! ( cant touch it for more than a few secs) . My other unit that is running is just warm to the thouch.
Is the fan bad or the capacitor? Would a over heated fan shut the entire system down? Thanks for any help.

I take it you are speaking of your outdoor, Condenser, unit... if so yes, a bad motor, cap, even a filthy condenser coil could contribute to overheat and cutting out on the overloads.... I have never seen a condenser tripping it's internal overloads affect the indoor section in anyway unless you blow fuses and have your transformer outdoors, which I doubt you have given the goodman model # you gave.. are you positive your indoor blower shuts off?

regardless it sounds like you need to call a Technician out to figure out why your unit keeps cutting out, the longer you wait the more damage could be done to the internal components of your compressor...

Your indoor blower is shutting down also ?

Is it maintaining indoor temp? The only thing you can try before calling in a tech is....Turn the breaker off to the airhandler, remove the stat from the wall and jump "R+Y+G" wires. Restore power and see how long it runs then. If it runs continuous without shutting down then your stat is giving you the problem. If it still acts the same it could be anything like Acman said. A bad circuit board or bad connection would be the 1st guess. But without the proper tools you're in the dark.

Thanks again for all the replys. I was thinking the same thing about a bad stat. Yes I am 100% sure the fan in the inside unit also shuts off also the light on the stat turns off telling me the system has turned off. So maybe the entire system turning off is from a bad stat. So my outside fan may have nothing to do with the current problem but should it be VERY HOT to the touch.

No it should not be VERY HOT. Is it the fan or the coils/unit casing that is hot? It may just need a good cleaning.

As to the inside cutting off that is weird. I notice you mentioned the light on the t-stat. Is it electronic? If so check the batteries (if it has them). I have seen some really strange things happen with some programmable t-stats when the batteries went bad.

The casing is just warm but the area between the 4 bolts that hold the motor on is hot as hell.

You need a new fan motor. Its over heating. You better replace as it could cause a fire.
