We are finishing a bonus room above our garage and are likely going to install a ductless, mini-spilt a/c system. I've heard mostly good things about these systems and think this would be a good option for us. The room will be near 300 sq/ft finished.
I called a local (Atlanta, GA) a/c installer and was given a quote of $2100 installed for a mitsubishi mr. slim system at about 9000 BTU. I'm still in the middle of my research and am trying to figure out all I can researching company web sites and internet forums like this one and trying to figure out resonable prices.
I'm wondering if these ductless systems are a DIY job or is professional installation necessary? I know that depends on how common sense competent the DIY'er is mechanically and electrically too. If I try to tackle this job, I will be able to recieve advice/help from a friend who installs a/c systems, but he's not experienced with these ductless systems.
So are these ductless systems do-able for a DIY "shade tree home improver" or should I shop around for professional installation?

You would be better off to have a HVAC company put it in. If you buy it and put it in there is no warranty on it . If your buddy is EPA have him buy it and back it.

You could do the mechanical and electrical install of the components and and then use a pro for the connection of the refrigerant lines and final test. I don't know how this might affect the warranty.

I agree with Ed, best to shop around for a Pro where the warranity can be covered if needed. Otherwise, if you buy on line warranity is gone.

$2100 sounds like a good price to me. It actually sounds like a really good price. I don't think I could get away with charging that little. But then again, I'm in California and everything is expensive here. I still recommend getting a few prices.
Ductless split installations are no different than ducted systems other than the lack of duct work.

does that include heat or is it straight cool? $2100.. is not a bad price at all , that includes installation and equipment?
actually I would be leary a little of that price, it seems a bit low....
Ive sold a lot of misubishi splits and it just seems too low...
ductless splits are not cheap even at dealer cost.

The price quote came from a reputable and legitimate company here in metro Atlanta. I have frineds out in Cali that are always commenting on the price differences from here to there.
Yes, this price quote was on the Mitsubishi system that is a heat/air combo that would be ideal for a 350 sq/ft space. We'll more than likely go that route, but I'll get a few more quotes.
The quotes I'm getting for a traditional ducted a/c system is around $1800 per ton.
