I live in southern california and just could not stand the heat so my ac is on all day. I set my t-stat to 80 and ac was working fine until last night I heard a click and heard humming sound and no air coming out of my registers. I opened the furnace and found out that blower was not working, is there anything I can check further before calling a tech, if there's a voltage that need to be measured I have a vom available. I appreciate any suggestions or advice. Thnks

Make sure you are not running the a/c if the fan not running, otherwise, will have a block of ice.

With power off, reach in and see if the blower wheel spins free.

if yes, then WITH CARE turn power on (may have to push a button on the blower door) and fan at t-stat set to fan ON.. AGAIN WITH CARE spin the well, and see if it takes off. If it don't and the motor is getting power on Cool tap, then try another wire next speed down. (Most motor are multi speed)

Hello Jay, thnks for your response. I did what you said...

Anyway, the fan took off so is that mean my blower motor is going bad? Do I need to replace it? If so, does home improvement centers carry this item?

If you just gave the blower wheel a push and it took off. Take the blower capacitor out and get one just like it. A electric shop can have them or a hvac company.

Hello Ed, I appreciate your response. I got a new capacitor with same exact value and installed it in. But blower still won't turn by itself. Could it be the motor? If it is then how much would it cost? Thanks again///

if you tried a new run cap and blower does not run, the motor needs to be replaced, we installed ALOT of amana's at one time, to be honest your motor may by OEM , meaning you cannot by a generic over the counter replacement but need the exact manufacturer's motor. if so it can be excess of $110 easily...

also how old is unit? Amana the actual manufacturer went out of buisness along time ago, the current Amana's are made by Nordyne which also makes Westinghouse, Frigidair, feders, maytag, and about 20 other different names...

so if its true Amana, I am not sure who could get parts, am not positive whether or not nordyne is manufacturing parts for older amanas...

My unit is almost 20 yrs old...so I guess it's that time ha?:) I guess there's a place close by my house that I can purchase a motor from. It's called Johnstone Electric, they supply most contractors around Upland,Ca. My question is , is it still safe to use my AC using my manual "kick" start until I get a new motor because I have extended family visiting us and I badly need the AC running during this heatwave season.

If the blower will stay running with the stats fan switch in the on position you should be ok. Just don't let it run with the blower off or it will freeze up on you and could send liquid refrigerant to the compressor and a dead compressor will soon follow.

If Johnstone will sell to you just take the blower motor with you. They may be able to match it up. Most are open on Saturday till noon or so.

I will go ahead and remove my motor and see if I can get a match. I'll let you guys know the results.

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE (JAY11,ED, ACMAN AND MATTISON, HOPE I DIDN'T LEAVE ANYONE) FOR THEIR EXPERTISE AND ADVICE. MY A/C WORKS GREAT NOW AFTER REPLACING THE BLOWER MOTOR. I TTOK THE OLD OUT AND TOOK IT TO THE HVAC PLACE/PARTS SUPPLIER AND GOT EQUIVALENT MOTOR. BEFORE I PUT THE NEW MOTOR IN , I CLEANED THE BLADES, HOUSING AND THE FURNACE WHILE EVERYTHING WAS OUT. SEEMS OR FEEL LIKE MORE AIR IS COMING OUT OF MY REGISTERS NOW. THANK AGAIN, D-I-Y DID IT AGAIN FOR ME. --- HOPE4ME

A little bit of cleaning does help air flow if the blower and filter was dirty..

Also, don't forget to keep the outdoor unit clean and free flow air.

Thanks Jay, by the way how do you clean the fins of the unit outside? Do I use water and soap then water hose it?

With the power off, remove the top (depends on brand) and take a garden house and spray inside out. soap is not needed.
