Out of all the mechanical things in the world, ACs are one of the few that I don't know very well.
A few days ago the blower fan went out on our AC. Since I don't understand much, I opened up the AC and didn't touch anything inside. Well while I was out today my mother called in a repair man in order to fix it, he charged her $519. That's a lot of money. The invoice has two items on it, $94 for the "Diagnostic Charge" which is understandable, and $425 to "Replace Control Board (conversion kit)." First of all what the hell is a conversion kit and is it necessary? Second, is this price justified? How hard would it have been for me to buy this "control board" myself and replace it? I called them and they "assured me they did not overcharge my mother." The guy also mentioned that there was no way I could buy this control board, it had to be bought from Carrier. Oh by the way the model is Carrier 58MXA080 if that's of any importance.
Thanks in advance.

Carrier parts are hard to find on line. I say board is in that range.
How old is the furnace? I think there is 5 years warranity on it.

It's more than five years old. I've spoken to several technicians and they claim that yes, that is a justifiable price.
