I am refinishing about 1200 sqf of wood flooring in our new home, and there is a staircase that I started to work on using a handheld orbital sander, 60 grit paper. Well, its not going well. It takes 1 to 2 paper changes for each step and I am still not happy with the result. I have heard I should try using an edger.
One of the big problems I am having is small black marks all over the inside edges of each step. It seems that staples or tack nails had been used for carpeting, and there are black marks that seemed to have bled out from each of these staples. It looks like burn marks, but I am assuming its the staples oxidizing each spot? My 60 grit hand-held does absolutely nothing to them.
So multi-question post here... Tips on sanding stairs in general, and what to do about multiple small black spots(more tiny football shaped spots) all over the edges.
Thanks a lot!
