The cash vallue in your policy will be stated in your policy documents.
If you do not have them you will need to get them from your insurance company.

the policy was took out in 1962. I do have the policy but the company that had it has changed and I really like to know how the cash value is determined on a policy that is close to 50 yrs old

Like I said, the only value a policy has is what is stated in the policy documents.
If the company has changed hands the new company should have to honor the former company's obligations but may not make it easy for you.
Contact the company and set up an appointment with one of their reps to see if they will help you.
If they don't you may need a lawyer.
Let us know how you make out.

You may also want to call the department of insurance for your state. They should be able to help you find the new company & assist you in contacting them without incurring the expense of an atty. If the policy was paid up they probably sent you a certificate of the value. Don't assume your documentation is right ........ spend your time contacting the company so you know for sure. When you reach them, have a new certificate issued to you.
This would also be a good time to gather all of your important papers & organize them. If YOU are having this much trouble, how about your family if something happened to you ?? Make sure your personal representative knows where everything is .
