I think of tecumseh as something to walk away from, new or used, good deal or no.

Was this on a snowblower perhaps? Otherwise you should be able to put a air filter on it, just buy one.

AS for the carb, sounds like it needs a good cleaning and a rebuild kit.

I don't think Tecumseh and Briggs are about the same. They each have features that I like.

It sounds like you bought an engine with problems. I would start by giving the carb. a good cleaning and I don't mean just spray it with a can of carb. cleaner. You will have to remove the carb. from the engine, disassemble it, soak it, clean all the little internal passages and orfices, and then then re-assemble, install and adjust it properly.

Well what i would try from the things you said it does it sounds like it may have some dirt in the carb i would take it off and get someone to clean it for you. If you dont want to do that you can purchase some carb and choke cleaner too and see if that works

taking the carb apart on a motor of this type is very very easy and it is common to find crud/varnish/etc. in the bowl - just take some stating fluid in the can with the red plastic wand and squirt all the holes and passages for gas/air out, reassemble and you should be good to go - should take 30 minutes for the complete novice.

When I was a younger poorer man I once had an old lawnmower that was missing the air filter - I used a pair of old panty hose and that worked for 2 years!
