Looking at buying a home in SW Missouri. A wall from the living room is shared by the master bedroom. I would like to put in a two-sided fireplace to be shared by both rooms, no fireplace exists there at the moment.
Can someone give me some idea as to rough ballpark cost (I will have a very limited budget after just buying the house), and 2) who do you contact for such a job; a general contractor - or is there some other profession that is more geared toward just building fireplaces?

You may have to build a double chimney system in order to meet codes, so in reality, back-to-back won't matter alot. And I am sure you don't want a thru fireplace due to privacy matters.
Brick masons can build fireplaces, but you would do yourself a good service to find one that specializes in fireplaces, as there is alot of air movement, choking of the tubes, etc. that must be taken into consideration.

Well; i assume your looking for a stone fireplace, running off coal or wood in between these two rooms - hmm in england we dont really have anyone who completes those type of services; although it would be expected that a builder would be required to make the hole in the wall; and it would be upto you to buy, and mould the fireplace to suit what your looking for; i admire your courage; good luck

Thanks for your replies. My wife has nixed the idea of the two-sided fp for exactly as you said - privacy issues.
Now, the home does have an existing fp in the basement, but I really want one in the living rooom where we spend the majority of our time. Usually in homes with more than one fp they share the same chimney, but we won't be able to do that becaue the fp in the basement is on the opposite side of the house from the living room. So it would be a full build from scratch. (one-sided though :o )
