In my previous house, I had installed unfinished hardwood. There we put 3 coats of polyurethane to finish the floor. I liked this as I could buff some of the light scratches away without having to refinish the entire room.

In my new house I have installed prefinished 3/4" hardwood floors. These new floors have an aluminum-oxide finish. I am now worried that I will not have the flexibility that I had before. I was hoping to get some of that back by top coating the prefinished floor with a polyurethane finish.

Has anyone done such a thing? What products would you suggest for something like this? Is there a better way to add more protection to the floors?

Thanks,

Follow manufacturer's care and maintenance recommendations to prevent scratches and wear of finish. Applying an additional finish to prefinished hardwood flooring would likely present adhesion issues and void manufacturer's finish warranty. The addition of aluminum oxide to finish makes for a very scratch resistant (not scratch proof) and durable finish and should serve you well with proper care and maintenance.
