I have read through the forums and can not seem to find a problem like mine. I have a Whirlpool Super Capacity 465 gas stove/oven, model # SF315PEGW. [I]t has digital controls for the oven and a glow plug igniter. When I set the oven to come on it has a ten minute pre heat cycle for 350 degrees. The problem is that it "sometimes may take up to three minutes after the glow plug is burning bright orange before the burner will ignite. In addition, when it does light the flame is a very small, weak flame that is about 1 or 2 inches. Sometimes it will remain that way and never reach temperature and other times after maybe another 7 minutes it will increase to cover about half of the flame plate above the burner. Sometimes, but not always I can coax the larger flame on by increasing the temp to 550 or by turning on the broiler feature. The appliance is 5 years old and the oven is only used about once or twice a month. The burner seems to be clean and free from debris. The igniter comes on and burns a bright orange, p.s. it is enclosed in a cage? I have never serviced this appliance before so I know my reputation as a horticultural assassin could not have preceded me to this arena!!!!!!!!! or could it?????????????

Hello Jim and Welcome to the Do It Yourself Web Site and my Gas Appliances topic.

Very likely the HSI (Hot Surface Igniter) is weak. Regardless of it's age or amount of usage, likely to be to weak glowing to ignite gas. Replacing it should resolve the problem.

Instructions step by step can be found in the sticky note. Rather easy task to replace. Just use care with the new one. They are fragile (I.E. Break easily) if bumped hard or dropped.

Cautionary Reminder Note:
Before attempting any repairs, be sure to unplug the appliance from the wall receptacle power source first.
