We just purchased a vacation home- the people who owned it were very heavy smokers. I found a website that suggested ammonia based products for washing nicotine stained walls, and then priming with Zinsser Oil Based primer. The surfaces that were not primed (woodwork, wainscotting) were cleaned and then cleaned again. Carpeting has all been pulled out and I'm in the process of cleaning and sealing the floors as well. Is there anything I am missing? Does someone have experience with nicotine odors?

Thanks much!

Good plan so far, like to add that the ductwork and hvac systems should be cleaned and filters changed very often for awhile. Drapes would also need it. Look into ozone machines. They pretty much work well, but the house would have to be vacant at the time. But they pretty much go in and bombard the area with o2 and ozone. Which destroy odors. I would do that as a last step after cleaning. Most carpet cleaning professional offer this service.

Might not be an issue, but things like drapes and shower curtains would need to be cleaned as well.

Good idea about ductwork and hvac cleaning. I'll have to check into that. We did pull down draperies, etc. and washed them several times. The odor came out although they are somewhat yellowed- they are good enough for now until they can be replaced. We also replaced all the window shades.

I wasn't aware of o2 and ozone bombardment. Would this be something we could do after carpeting goes in or is it just as effective after?

Thanks much!

I don't think timing is all that important for the ozone generator. More important would be to make sure the floor underneath the carpet is addressed before the new carpet is installed and then ozone when convenient. You're dealing with all of the reasons that many people are not smoking in their own homes anymore - the cleanup is enormous.

yeah clean and seal subfloors first..make every other effect to remove the odor before going to ozone..it can be pricey
