I moved into an apartment with a Hotpoint gas stove (with self-cleaning oven). In order to install an air conditioner, I unplugged the stove. Now the clock is not operating, which is okay. I assume the electricity is used to ignite the burners and oven. Can I safely use a match or other kind of lighter instead of the installed ignitor system?
Thanks for your help,

Could you explain more what your a/c has to do with your stove outlet? You do not say in your post why you just can't plug the a/c into the stove outlet. Or is the stove and outlet in the way of where you put the a/c?

Hello silvermarple and Welcome into my Gas Appliances topic.
If the stove has spark igniter's to light the top burners, appliance must be plugged in to use oven. You can light the top burners using a match but not the oven. No gas will come out without the HSI (Hot Surface Ignition) glowing. It needs electrical power to operate.

I'm still curious as to what prompted the request.

DaVeBoy, I unplugged the stove so that I could plug in an air conditioner, and I wondered whether I could operate the stove anyway.
