Help. We moved into our house about 3 months ago and have discovered some mold in one of out closets and the laundry room.
The mols started groing on some shoes in the closet and we can see some starting to begin on a tank in the laundry/utility room.

Any ideas how to stop and prevent?

Thanks

First off you have to find the source of the mold...

Mold needs moisture, humidity and heat. So, it seems you have a leak or a old leak that wasnt taken care of. Mold and moisture damage to interior walls and ceilings can remain damp for weeks, months..even years.

Best thing to do is if the area is carpeted. Pull it back to see if the source is there. if drywall is involved. Best bet, is if the drywall is soft to the touch, replace it. Seal the mold by applying a surface enamel spray then scraping it and vaccuming up with a hepa filtered vaccum. This will help keep the mold spores from becoming air born. For flooring, concrete subfloors, would need bleached and then sealed. Wood subfloors would need to be replace in extreme cases. Mild damaged and be bleached then sealed as well. But you have to find the source of the moisture. Running the hvac system in your home with the fan on and the ac turned down will help. A dehumidifer will help as well in the area.

Always were PPE....face mask, gloves...and eye protection. When in doubt contact and hire a professional for repairs. Mold is nothing to play around with. There have been serious health problems linked to it. Since, you just purchased your home contact you realtor or attorney if this is a preexisting problem..to see what you can do. If the problem is bad enough also look into home owners.

Mold in basement closets and storage rooms is not uncommon, especially where there is higher humidity and poor ventilation. Do not store leather in areas that are high in humidity and poorly ventilated.

Check your humidity levels. Humidity should be 35-55%. If higher, dehumidify. Leaving closet and laundry room doors open to improve ventilation is helpful. Running fans will improve air circulation.
