I recently had a 3 ton central air unit installed ,within 2 wks the AC started blowing warm air. The installer came out 2 times in a 4 wk period to recharge the unit with refrigerant. I think the unit has a leak and he doesn't want to look for it. Other than loosing its cooling ability every 2wks ,the unit is ok.

And what can we do for you??

You sound as you have the problem figured out, now you just need to get the installer to remedy the problem.

If this guy has a boss, call him. If you already talked to him, call the owner if applicable.

If you can get no satisfaction with this, call the manufacturer of the unit to complain about one of their dealers.

If this gets you no where, call another contractor to fix the problem and send a bill to the current installer for reimbursement. If they refuse to pay for the repair, sue them in small claims court (if it fits).

If your losing that much freon he should be able to hear that leak.

But more then likley the leak is on a braze joint. One thing you can check is if the caps are on the valves where he charges the unit, I have found they are the most likley place to leak.

He also cannot keep putting froen in a known unit that is leaking, he can be fined by the EPA.

As was stated in the past post, call and talk to the boss.

Hey just for kicks get some kids bubbles stuff . Go around and put some on the valves or where it look like they silver soldered the copper pipes. See what you find.

Thanks for the advice, now I can take care of the problem. I didn't want to proceed without confirming what I thought was the problem.

Ed's idea is a good one.

That way when the tech comes out and states, "I can't find the leak", you can make him look like he has no idea what he is doing and show him where it is. Hopefully he will be embarassed enough to fix it.
