What should the pressures be at the return and on the high side of a 4-ton unit? Currently mine are 225 high side and 50 something on the return. Is this what is causing the return to freeze?

Yes, you need to call a pro to check out your unit for leaks, repair as necessary, and charge to specs.

If your EPA you would know what the psi should be. If your not you shouldnt put the gauges on a unit. You could contaminate the unit and let in noncondensables and that will screw up the unit. Best is at outdoor unit big copper line cold and wet small line warm .
