I am about to refinish my basement for a play area for my kids. Right now I have a dehumidifier down there that works well but warms up the room (NY). I was thinking of getting a 12kBTU port unit that has a dual duct system and no tank. The salesperson told me that I would need to insulate the heat exhaust duct cause it can disperse heat into the room. I have small windows down there and would rather not use one up for an AC.
Thoughts?
The room size is 500sqf open area.

Why not put a sanyo unit in. It is an ac unit that is a split system and look good on the wall.
I also live in NY and have installed many of them.

I can't take off from the cental air because I have an old house the the vents come from the attic through the closets to the first floor.

I really don't want to invet 2-3K in a unit like the Sanyo. Want to go with either a free standing or window. I am still looking for opinions on the free standing

I have a 12,000BTU twin-duct model and the salesman told you the truth about needing insulated ducts. The units come with collapsable plastic ducting and they will indeed radiate heat into the area and this will seemingly reduce the effectiveness of your unit.
Easiest thing is to just get a length (25feet) of flexible insulated duct from your local big box, cut to the required lengths and make some transition fittings. You can use metal duct take-off collars fastened into a piece of plywood for the window end. Probably the take-offs can also be modified for use at the unit. My unit has 5 inch ductwork.
My unit also has heat, fan only and dehumidify settings. It is not as nice as a mini-split but it cost less than 25% of a mini-split and since I only need it about ten to fifteen days a year it works just fine.
