I am getting a new A/C only system, furnace is in good shape. Question where I get confused. Does variable speed refer to condenser/airhandler or both?

If I get a VS do I have to replace the furnace or just the motor insisde the furnace?

I sure wont try and put a V/S blower set up . In an old furnace or heatpump. When we say V/S that is the inside blower. Blowing over the AC inside coil. Also this way you can have a humidistat control on it. This will like slow the blower down so it can take out more humidity when needed.

So Ed, when they say 14 SEER VS unit. .Most likely the WHOLE furnace would be replaced not just the blower motor?

2) Cant someone just get a 15 SEER condenser and indoor coil w/ older furnace? Or is that new system designed to run w/ the new VS airhandler only? Thanks!!

Can I buy a 15 seer condenser and indoor coil and just use my 8 year old furnace?

I know I wont get the SEER rating If I dont use the VS airhandler.

If you want variable speed, the whole furnace needs to be replace, and if you do go that route, you will get two stage of heating, and that's great to have in the winter.. VERY comfortable, and even temp. The big plus of variable speed is quiet.

If the budget don't allow you, you can still use your current furance, you won't get the full SEER rating.

Yes you sure can. We also have units that go up to a 19 seer. If you go with a 15 or more seer .You can get a tax credit up to $300
Dont forget-- How long will you stay in the home and How much does the AC run for where you live. This all counts in pay back for the higher seer unit.

Coincidently, with my latest Xcel Energy power company bill (which I paid today), where they always have energy tips on a flyer inside, they mentioned about upgrading your old existing central air by ONLY changing out the inside coil and outside condensor unit to get maximum efficiency.
