I recently had a coil in my attic replaced. The orginal was put in 1994 and had rust on the bottom that resulted in water making its way into the pan. The old setup had one fitting to the main drain and another fitting that just elbowed strait down.. I assume emergency evac incase the main line got stopped up. The a/c guy who put in the new unit got info off the old coil and then got some info off my a/c unit. He called me and recommended I go with a High effeciency coil so if I decide to change the outside unit I would not have to upgrade the coil again. He mentioned this one had some sort of a valve in it that my other coil did not have which makes this a better piece. We got it all installed and it seems fine but we have not had a hot hot day yet to really see if its working right. He is my friends brother who has done a/c commercial and some residiential for years. He charged me 700$ parts and labor to swap the coil. Does the price sound good? Also is it ok to run this high eff. coil with my older outside unit? Thanks for any info!

The price was right Id say.It sounds like he knows AC. I take it that was a TXV valve in the coil. he told you about.

Why the rust????? did the drain line have a P trap in it?????. Overflow shut offswitch?Does the over flow pan have a drain to the outside of the home??

Whats a P-Trap? Not sure about the rust.. this guy said it was because of the cases they used on the cheap coil that was put in. I do not know of any overflow switch installed in the coil or the pan. The pan has a feed outside of the house which is why I found out the original coil was leaking. Now this new coil has one pipe out that goes to the drain line.. then a piece of pipe that goes strait up and has a cap on it. He told me to leave the cap off and im not sure why. With the cap off if it gets stopped up I think it would overflow onto the seetrock below. So I took and installed my self a valve on top and below the valve I used a T fitting and ran it over to the pan.. then elbowed down to the pan. So if the main drain overflows it can go into the pan and not my house. The purpous of the valve is so i can open it up and look down inside the pipe for blockage or if I need to run something down the tube to clear it out I have a strait shot of site. Does this make sense? Thanks again for your help.. these forums have been great!

Whats a P-Trap?
Lets say from the unit where the water will come out you come off that. Then right away you have the line turn down and come back up in a big U then run the line on out to the drain. thats a P trap. Now if you put like a vent pipe in this drain line. It has to be on the side of the U away from the unit.

The red handled valve is just a way for me to look into the main drain. The a/c guy just left a pipe pointing up and open blowing air.

I cant tell if the drain line traps or not
P trap drain-- from unit>----U-------------->
That duct tape wont hold up ,up there in the attic
The pic came out good . Is blower blowing through the coil or sucking?

blower is blowing through the coil. Most of the duct tape has been there since the beginging. What ive added I have covered in Iron Grip accept for a few piece that are left for easy removal to get inside of hte coil from teh side access. As far as there being a P trap I dont think there is. I dont totally understand how the P-trap works. Did you see the loose collar on the metal cabinet? I need to remove the flex duct to push the metal tabs back to pull it tight. The a/c guy told me the other day to cake the irongrip all around the collar after i get the tabs back into place. He said the stuff is strong and will seal it up. Seems like no matter what i still find a place were some air is leaking. Some I cant even feel the air but I feel the coolness coming off of it. Not sure how much is acceptable. I run the expensive 10-12$ a/c filters and never the cheap ones. Is there any highflow "super" air filter out there? IM running the 3M 1085's at the moment... 20x30x1 is the size. I was told by my a/c guy never to run the washable/re-usable ones. Thanks again for your input ED!
