I have a two story house 1100 sq ft downstairs, 700 sq ft fairly well insulated upstairs.
There is only one a/c system with the thermostat downstairs which by the way is nice and cool while upstairs can get about 8-10 deg hotter on a 90 deg day. I called several A/C dealers and got estimates as follows,
1) $1150 to zone the existing system (carrier dealer)
2) $2000 to zone the existing system w/ honeywell controls (goodman dealer)
3) $2300 to zone the existing system w/ honeywell controls plus
2yr warranty parts/labor
4) $3300 to install an independent system for the upstairs (Rudd)
They all tried to sell me a whole replacement system ac/furnace which I may need in the near future but can't afford now plus current system puts out plenty of cold air (about 60deg out of the registers on a 90 deg day).
How can there be such a wide gap in the price of one versus the other. The carrier guy said that they don't like honeywell components because they are not good but did not mention what brand they use. Any input from the pros here will be appreciated, thanks to all:eek:

In No way do we use zone controls for a home for up and down. Large comm yes. There is just to much air so you end up with a bypass damper set up next you can freeze the coil . Or pay for the unit to run and half the cold air is just going around an around.
If you are happy with the heat in the home why not put a AC unit in for just the upstairs. with no heat.
Think about it To do the dampers and zone right so it will work good they should take and rework all of the duct work in the home. Not just cut into what you have now

How can there be such a wide gap in the price of one versus the other. What ever they can get by with.
