Hello I have a Kenmore 60 series softheat large capacity softheat gas dryer model/stock number 97565110 75651
22,000 BTU hour. The seal in the back of the drum broke just came out like the sash in a window. And it looked burnt. It was cracked before but this time it just came off. Worst case what happens if I run it.Is it a fire hazzard should I get it fixed or get a new one.The clothes came out scorched before could this be the cause. When its in the dryer it looks like a inner tube for a bike and it rest around the edge of the back of the drum when you look inside from the door. This dryer has a air dry cycle (no heat) would it be ok to run it on this cycle untill I get it fixed.

Hello lexmarks567 and Welcome into my Gas Appliances topic.

You can replace the gasket yourself. Remove the front panel, remove the drum tube. Note where the belt rotates on the drum and how it loops around the pulleys.

Remove, drum tube. Replace the tube drums gasket, install a new belt, since you are already in there. Also clean out all lint, inspect the venting system, than reassemble the cabinet front.

Should resolve any problems.

OK but one of the vents inside the dryer is scorched like a flar up.The cloths were always coming out scorched.and the gasket looked dryed and scorched. Is this any cause to be alarmed.

Nothing should be getting 'scorched' inside the drum or below it where the fire burns.

Gas and electric dryers work by pulling the air through the dryer. The air is pulled through the heating element or where the gas burns in the burner tube, by the blower wheel attached to the exhaust vent. The flame should in no way be able to make it around the corner and inside your drum. Nor should it be hot enough to scorch as there are safety switches on gas and electric dryers in several locations to prevent this (by the burner for one, and for the operating stat in the exhaust line, and also a high limit stat, to name 3).

Could you descibe in better detail what you mean by scortched clothes? Are like white clothes getting brown? Is there a pattern left on the clothes...like streaks? Have you ever reached inside the drum and pulled out still-drying clothes and had to fling them because they were too hot to handle?...or you felt the drum inside and scorched yourself? You might want to make sure no substance melted in the drum itself and is causing brown spots on clothes as sometimes this can happen. Another syndrome I have seen happen is when there is a misfit or wear of the gasket (seal, or whatever) you spoke of...clothes rim around there and pick up some residue on that gasket and leave brown streak marks on clothes.

To check on what is going on heat wise, you can always take a thermometer of some type that reads up to or above say 160 degrees and run the dryer and see what the temp is at the outside vent. It could read 140-160 perhaps for the high.

A main concern for replacing the mentioned seal is so that hot air HAS to be drawn through the dryer via through the burner or element. Air can bypass the element or flame when drum seals are out and actually cause heat to NOT get sucked into the drum.

Hi the whites are getting brown streaks in them so we have to turn them inside out so you can't see them. This dryer has a cooling down cycle where after the cloths are dry the dryer takes a 10 minute time limit to cool down before ending the cycle.the vent that lets heat into the drum is scorched like a rust color.I got a guy coming by at 9am to take a look at it we will see what he says about it.I have not reach inside the dryer when its running unless I forgot to put somthing in.We have always cleaned the lint filter after every use.maby the scorch marks are rust. But either way thats not right as like you said nothing should be getting scorched. Also I think your right about loseing heat cause some times the clothes don't get dry sometimes.

OK Another update. The repair guy said the dryer is safe to run but don't leave the cloths in there as the dryer could overheat and set the cloths on fire. He also said kenmore and worldpool are famos for the seal going out in the back. Hes also going to replace the belt cause its goings. He said the motor sounded good and strong.

Did you ask the guy what could make the dryer overheat to the point to start the clothes on fire?...in light of those safety cut out switches I mentioned?

Thanks for all the updates. I wish everyone would post back. Often I feel like I am a 'thread killer' as I tell people something...details on how to go about something... and never hear a word. Sort of frustrating.

I don't know but is has to be for metal and has to withstand the heat.Looks like spray paint through. At least the way he put it on.
