I just recently had my coil replaced. It was an older model that had rusted through. House was built in 1994. I got a buddies brother to help me do the install. He is good commercial/residential installer. We stuck up a high efficiency coil for when I go with a newer unit outside I wont have to upgrade the coil atleast. He pointed out that they didnt use "splittler boxes" in my attic. I have one large tube that has two smaller tubes shoved inside of it and taped up. This is done in 4 places. He said this is a cheap way of doing things and usually restricts the flow. He said building pyramid shaped boxes and feeding the large tube on the flat end and the two smaller parts towards the point of hte pyramid will increase my airflow. Does this sound right? Thanks for any advice!

Sounds like you've got flex duct. His idea would work great for your situation. They do sell galvanized spliters also.

The galvanized splitters... are they insulated on the inside? I was worried the attic heat may warm the air if they are not insulated. Thanks for the fast reply.

No they're not. You would have to wrap them in insulation yourself.

Do you think building one out of duct board would work just as well or better? I ccould just tape the crap out of it and paint some iron grip on it to make sure it seals and stays sealed.

Just make sure you use the right tape and staples on the ductboard. We use the iron on tape .It holds the best. Have reworked many where they come apart up in the attic.

I took a closer look today and felt the place whre it splits off.. it was rigid.. looks like it may already have the galvanized splitters installed and wrapped up so well neither I or the a/c guy who only glanced at them could tell. Is this ok? Would building boxes work better?
