Fireplaces, Heating Stoves, Flues and Chimneys - Removing lag bolts in brick

Replacing a mantel that was re-mounted way too high (above the original)...got all the wood off intact, any suggestions for removing lag/anchor bolts from brick in fireplace?

Although there are masonary screws (Tapcons etc) I would guess that the weight of the mantle needs stronger support bolts. Most installers use an anchor that the lag bolt screws into and expands. This should not present a problem for removal. Usually just turn counter-clockwise. Problem may be if an adhesive type substance was used to install them. I have seen epoxy type used and the only way to remove them is to cut them off. Good luck.

That's what I thought...I've been turning and turning, but the bolts won't screw out. There's no epoxy and the bolts are "wobbly" (another reason we're removing the mantel. I've tried to wobble them out but they won't budge and I don't want to damage the brick.

try getting a screwdriver or prybar under the head and apply pressure out as you try to unscrew .

or you may be able to just pull them out
