we are looking to buy a new lawnmower and would like to know the difference between front wheel drive vs. rear wheel drive in a self propelled lawnmower. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would think it's mostly marketing. That said, I think that front wheel drives would be easier to maneuver in tight areas because, when you push down on the handle bars, the drive wheels are in the air and the free turning rear wheels make it simpler to turn in tight areas.

Goldstar is right about the maneuverability.
One downside about front wheel drive is the front wheel traction wears down much faster.

And if you have to mow uphill, you'll find yourself lifting up on the handlebar to get enough traction for it to pull itself up the hill.

I bought rear wheel drive because I have to mow a hillside. Others who had similar hillsides and had front wheel drive complained that they lost traction when they needed it most.
