Purchased dark stain, prepped oak cabinets, proceeded to stain one section of cabinets today, and was quite surprised to find that the "dark" stain would not be dark enough. My goal is to have an almost "espresso" like color with a "hint" of red. Any suggestions? Do not want to spend a lot of money on stain trying to achieve effect!

Thanks!

Most over thecounter stains contain smaller amounts of pigment than those used in commercial manufacture.

Your best bet is to find a gel type stain of a suitable color. This can be applied in layers, allowing you to darken the color.

An alternative is to use a product like Minwax polyshades which contains both color and finish. This can be tricky, however, as you're brushing on color with the finish and it's easy to get streaks in the color.
