A quality silver polish may be effective to restore shine. Pitting and etching of metal may require buffing. There are jewelers who specialize in jewelry restoration.

My old trick is a toothbrush with some toothpaste and warm water.

Best way to remove tarnish from silver (as taught by my high school chemistry and physics teacher, Mr. Drake):
Wrap loosely in aluminum foil, shiny side out
Put into a non metal pan filled with water to above top of ring and foil
Add a spoonful each of salt and baking soda]
Heat gently for about twenty minutes (not to boil)
Unwrap ring - if still tarnished, heat a little longer.
The idea is that the aluminum foil is more chemically active and the salt and baking soda catalyze the reaction while the burner provides the energy so the tarnish leaves the silver and goes to the foil.

Silversmiths and curators do not recommend this method because it removes too much silver. Might be o.k. for the ring in need of heavy cleaning.

The toothpaste trick i have seen many times. But this was on a regular basis. Maybe you should take the ring to a jewler and see what its worth...before you go crazy trying to clean it.

thanks for the reply .the ring does have some pitting & there is sand stuck to it . I'll going to take it to a jewelery first ,thanks again.
