not sure where to post this, but:

the stone cutters recommended a sealant that cost $50 and had to be applied every 6 months - no surprise there ...

the hardware store has a product that costs about the same, is "teflon" based, and says on its label that it will last up to 20 years.

any recommendations, pros and cons?

It is highly recommended that granite kitchen countertops be sealed with a penetrating sealer recommended for that purpose. When water drops do not bead up, it is time to reseal. How frequently you need to reseal depends on amount of use of counter and wear and tear. Better quality sealers should last longer.

It is important to not apply any more sealer than what can be readily absorbed. If there is excess sealer left on the surface after several minutes, then it should be wiped off while still damp with an absorbing lint free type of cloth. Read and follow manufacturer's directions.
