While changing out a hall wall lite fixture and chasing down an other problematic "end of line" lite fixture (problem solved), I noticed that they all have a "This end up" label in them.
These fixtures aim downwards, in regards to the bulbs, when "this end up". Is there any problem with mounting them "upside down"? One of them really looks a lot better "upside down".
I can't see how heat would be the problem, with the bulbs and globes aiming up, or am I missing something?

Yes the heat from the blulbs will over heat the fixture. heat rises and intead of just rising up ond out the fixture it will rise into the fixture socket and wiring. The wire insulaton will over time become very hard and brittle and crck and fall off.

In addition, they catch bugs, and the bugs gather around the base, causing alot of heat. This is not to say you have bugs, OK? So it is Catch-22.

I could see that point, if the open end of the fixture would be pointing downwards - which it is only when "properly" wall mounted. Hence, my puzzlement (3 different fixtures).
When the fixture is mounted "upside-down" (as per: the label)the socket is below the bulb and the open end of the globe is above the bulb. The sockets are a ceramic type but it would seem that "upside-down" would offer the better cooling for the items you mentioned. Not really a 'globe' - I guess bowl would be better.
Bugs and dust are a worthy thought but I wouldn't be using it too much and I hear 'Smoldering Moth' has a relaxing affect...:D

If the socket is below the bulb then my point is not correct. If the globe is open on the top when upside down then I can only guess that these might be outdoor fixtures and the open top would let rain onto the bulb. Hot bulb would blow up when hit by rain.

That does raise an interesting possibility. They're not outdoor fixtures but I would imagine that a 'wall fixture' could be used in a bathroom environment as a vanity light.
I notice some, of like styles, are called "Vanity Lights" and others as "Wall Sconce/Fixture". Perhaps the "this end up" label is a 'catch-all' anti-liability statement from the company with a wet environment as the case in point. Perhaps even to remove any chance of injury or damage from trying to change the bulb when 'upside-down'. The old instructions on the shampoo bottle thing.
At any rate - mine is on a hall wall and would see minimal use. More for the eye than anything else so I guess there's no 'harm' to consider (in my case) other than the bug/dust collection. Just wanted to make sure.
Thanks for all the points to ponder!
