me and a friend want to exchange video letters. i plan on sending him a camera which can plug into the vcr's rca video-input slot.

the camera does not carry sound though and the rca connector, as I understand is only for signal, not volume so I'm wondering if there's any kind of el-cheapo mic out there that can plug directly into the rca port and has a mini amplifier in it so that all the person has to do is plug in the camera, plug in the mic, hit record and away we go?

or maybe my understanding of rca input technology is flawed and any mic will do?

thks,

video letters you say oo la la la vroom vroom

You can't just plug a microphone in it the unless you can find a mic with a builtin amp.

But you can use a mic for a pc. and then get patch cables at radio shack or best buy or circuit city or some electronics store maybe even walmart.

then plug these cables into the audio out of the pc which will have the head phone jack and on the other end of the cable will have rca. You can even get a splitter so you don't have to keep disconnecting your pc speakers.

The microphone would plug into the mic port on the pc of course. You will also have to adjust the pc volume so you don't over drive the rca signal level and just get useless noise out.

Get cheap radio with a mic jack and audio out. Then you can get a microphone for that and the appropriate cable at radio shack to hook the sound out where the head phone plugs in to your vcr
