In our living room, there are no ceiling lights and only a switch on the wall that controls a plug. I was just wondering what would be the easiest way to install 4 recessed lights in the ceiling that could be controlled by the same switch and then not have the plug controlled anymore. I guess, firstly, can this be done? Can these 4 recessed lights work off the existing switch? How do I fish the wires that are needed? I would assume I have to cut into the wall and the ceiling, but where?

How hard would this project be? I am pretty handy and have installed ceiling lighting before, but only from an attic down.

Any help is appreciated.

Generally it can be done, how specifically depends on how the switch is in the circuit. The real work is in running the wires.

Snafoo - without knowing your exact situation it's hard to answer your questions. The difficulty will be in getting access to run the wiring in the ceiling. If you're handy with sheetrock repairs and willing to cut into your LR ceiling it's definitely doable. Electrically, it's a simple job. I would use old work cans and remove a strip of sheetrock perpendicular to the ceiling joists, this way the joists are accessible for drilling.
Layout and cut the holes for the cans. Then run the lights in series by fishing the wires between joists to the can openings and back to the access you made.
Getting to the switch may also be a problem depending on where it is located. Again it all depends on your layout. You might get lucky and be able to fish the cable directly to the switch or you may have to open a wall or you might be able to run the wire in in the basement.
If your LR ceiling is insulated be sure to select the correct style cans.
