Can anyone help, I have 2 trip switches in my main fusebox, 1 for the socket ringmain and 1 for my lighting ringmain. I do not have seperate trip switches for up and down stairs. Upon turning on a bedroom light upstairs all the upstairs lights no longer work however all the lights downstairs do, how can this be when all the lights are on the same trip switch which has not tripped?

You either have the downstairs lights on the outlet breaker, or another consumer unit for your home.

Most people on this site are from North America. You sound like might be in UK. We don't use ring circuits here and not many people will be familiar with your problem.
Are you saying thet the upstairs light worked until you turned on the switch?
You could have an open connection on your ring. Acutally you would need to have two opens to cause this problem I think.

Yes i am from the UK. One of my kids were repeatedly turning the light on and off then the upstairs lights failed. I have checked all switches for loose wires but they all seem ok. I had a look up in the attic space to see if there was an obvious wiring problem to and from the junction boxes and what i found was a odd looking metal cast unit screwed to a joist, could this have a seperate fuse in it? It did not look like a standard junction box.

I know they use fuses in the plugs in UK. I don't know about fuses located in other areas. Check other connecton points on the ring for loose connectons. Give them a slight tug. They could look connected but still be loose.
You did try a new bulb in the fixture I hope. Repeated flicking the light could blow out a bulb easily.
