I finally got a new light fixture installed and the wiring in my house is apparently a bit odd. Anyway, the light has two switches, one regular switch and a dimmer switch. The dimmer switch will turn the light on and off, but the dimmer part doesn't work. The regular switch will only turn the light on and off if the dimmer has already turned the light on. The socket boxes are set up as follows:
The regular switch has one wire going into the box with a red, a black, a white, and the ground in it. The switch itself has one screw on the bottom left where the black is attached. The ground attaches at the top. On the right side the white is attached to the top right screw and the red attaches to the bottom right screw.
In the dimmer switch box, there is also another switch which controls a different fixture. There are four cables entering the box containing the wires as described below:
Cable 1 - black(B1), white(W1), ground(G1)
Cable 2 - black(B2), white(W2), red(R2), ground(G2)
Cable 3 - black(B3), white(W3), red(R3), ground(G3)
Cable 4 - black(B4), white(W4), red(R4), ground(G4)
The switches are as follows:
The dimmer switch has a red wire coming from the top left. There is a black wire and a red wire coming from the top right.
The regular switch has four screws, two on either side.
The wires are attached as follows:
G1 to G2
W1 to W2
B2 to the red wire on the top right of the dimmer switch
R2 to the red wire on the top left of the dimmer switch
B1 to the black wire on the top right of the dimmer switch
G3 to G4
W3 to W4
R3 to the top left screw of the regular switch
R4 to the bottom left screw of the regular switch
B3 to the top right screw of the regular switch
B4 to the bottom right screw of the regular switch
I hope someone can help me with this one. Thanks in advance for your assistance.:)

From initial reading of your post, it seems the dimmer switch is a spst rather than a 3 way switch, as would be required in your situation. The installation of two wires under one screw isn't proper, and one of the wires should be to the third screw on a 3 way switch. The "regular" switch you are referring to is a 4 way switch, and helps control lighting in at least 3 locations. It shouldn't have anything to do with the dimmer if it is in the same box.

I disagree. Your dimmer has three wires. It is a three way dimmer. It is fried. Try replacing it. The wire you marked B1 goes to the common connection on your new dimmer.

There is also another 3-way switch somewhere, as the second switch is a 4-way.

Joed, as I read the post, the dimmer has three wires coming to it, but the black and red are on the same screw. ("black and red wire from the top right").Maybe I misread it. But I agree with you if it is a 3w, then it is fried, and only the hard contact is working.

I read it as two red wires and a black wire coming out of the dimmer. The black being the odd color is the common connection.
