My kids were playing out back and my dog was on our patio and he chewed one of the boards on the bottom rail. The wood is stained--thankfully we have stain left over from the original owners, but i was hoping that we could use a wood filler to fill in the area he chewed on. i'd hate to have to replace the board since there are a lot of boards and a screen on it and its easy to get to where he chewed. my hope is to find a wood filler that is weatherproof and stainable. anyone know what i can use?
thanks,
charlie

You should be able to patch it with durhams rock hard putty. Don't know how well it will stain though. If you have a solid color stain it will be ok.

Most big box, hardware & paint stores should carry rock hard putty. It is only slightly stainable, if you have solid stain it will cover ok. If you have a transparent stain, it will depend on the color of the stain but it will probably show.

After 30 + years repairing and refinishing furniture I have yet to find a wood filler that stains like the surrounding wood. It's just something you'll have to play with.
As mentioned in other posts a solid color stain will probably cover. If the original stain has any transparency, you'll have to work on it to get a match and blend in.

Mnwax makes a two part wood filler usable outdoors and is as stainable as any of the fillers are. It's a good product with good reviews from customers.
