As you will see from the picture above, the room does not have enough lighting. There is only one light in the ceiling that too focused on the fireplace. The room size is 17 X 20. There is no other light in the room.

Is there any way I can illuminate the room better through better fixtures. Also I want to put a fan in the center of the room. The room sits on top of the garage. Is this possible-DIY ?

Thanks for your help

Sure. Anything is posssible.

Do you have access to the attic area? It would make things much easier.

As far as lighting types go, you will probably get as many suggestions as you will posters. What you need to do is decide what and how much you want to light. A visit to a lighting showroom is often en"light"ening when trying to decide what you like.

Can lights tend to be more specific in their patterns while a trouffer ( a built in light available in many sizes. 2 x 4 feet and 2 x 2 feet is common) they have flourescent tubes is more of a general lighting source. There are literally hundreds of possibilities. That is why I suggest a lighting show room field trip/

The fan is probably a possibility as well. The only thing I question is how tall is your ceiling?

One solution is to come off the ball light with track lighting parallel to the front wall to within 2' of the outer walls and turn 90 degrees back into the room with track, setting lights outward and slightly downward to wash the walls with light. This is the simplistic approach, as no new circuits or wiring would be necessary.
How high is the ceiling? Judging from the size of the window, I would say 7'6" max. If so, a ceiling fan won't work due to the low profile of the blades and possible light fixture attached to it.
If you can get into the overhead, you can run a set of can lights sufficient to provide enough lighting.
Overall it is a diy, but really involved.

Ceiling Height is 8 feet. Also there is a bed room on top of this room. No attic

As long as you don't play pro basketball or like to do jumping jacks a fan is possible although you won;t have a lot of clearance. A lighting kit would definatley be out.

It will give you an odd feeling standing under it while it is running though with those whirring blades over head and all.
You definatley need a very low profile fan.

Again, head on down to the hone improvment stores and see what you like. Measure the height and then when you get home, actually measure where it would be above your head.

You may find that it is a bit too close for comfort.

Ouch, I just read the updated info on the bedroom above.

It can still be done but it can be a lot more work. The track lighting chandler was speaking of would be the easiest. Like I said before though, anything is posible if you want to do the work.

One of the problems with track lighting though is that they also hang down from the ceiling.
