Hello, I am painting a large, wooden kitchen table and would like to know if anyone could help me.

I am an art student in college and I am painting an intricate design on this table. I was wondering what I need to do/know to this table for preperation, paint, and finishing so that it is possible to be a functioning table for a family to still eat on etc. any help would be greatly appreciated!

thanks

Welcome to the forums

I'm not sure just what you are wanting to do but assume you want to first stain and seal/poly the table. After painting your artwork you would want to apply another coat or two of poly to protect it. Unless ambering wouldn't be problem you'll want to use water based poly.

It also might depend on what media you are using for your design, as to what the bottom and top coats of paint/sealer should be

i will probably be using acrylic paint. will that be okay to paint on top of poly>?

Won't be an issue if you use a waterbase poly. Would probably be ok with oil base since the acrylic would be trapped between the coats of poly. Oil base poly will change the color of most paints though.

if the table already has a nice finish on it, would it be okay to paint the design directly on top of that and then cover in poly to protect the artwork?

and thanks for all the feedback btw

Yes but only if your paint and finish sealer are compatable with the current finish.
