I have a cabinet that has several drawers in it. It is currently unfinished. I want to stain and varnish. How do I do this without getting the drawer slides covered in stain/varnish? Do I remove all the hardware before beginning? or just tape the hardware? I'm a novice at the finishing process. Thanks for the help.

It is always best to remove all hardware if feasable. Stain is pretty easy to wipe off of non pourous surfaces. Often the drawer sides and bottoms are left unfinished. Although I seldom stain them I do prefer to varnish/poly the sides and bottoms.

Before staining, sand lightly [with the diorection of grain] apply stain with rag or brush, let set for desired time and wipe off excess stain. The longer the stain sets the more color the wood will obsorb. be sure to wipe off the excess before it sets up. Let the stain dry throughly before applying sealer/poly.
