Fireplaces, Heating Stoves, Flues and Chimneys - Replace Fireplace Facing

I have a "regular" red brick fireplace in my house, and I want (actually, my wife wants) to remove the the brick front and replace it with stacked stone. Not to oversimplify the project, but is this a matter of simply using a hammer and chisel to remove the brick facing and then building the stacked stone front? I have not been able to find any "how-to-do-it" books on this particular subject, so any advise would be appreciated.

Just watch out for the lintel plate over the fireplace, as it will have to be reinstalled when you do your rock. I am sitting here looking at my floor to ceiling 8' wide brick surround and hearth, and even though I remodel for a living, I wouldn't even think of tearing it out. It ain't broke.
