I need a some suggestions for staining ballisters in a deck railing. The deck is 12'x16'x12'. i can't spray it on.

Brush, or if they are the square sided kind, a quality pad
(do not use the cheep W*M or HD pads, Paint Shop or Shur-Line)

I prefer a brush - don't forget to protect the deck below from stain splatter.

Looks like a brush is the chosen method. A friend suggested some kind of "mitt",but that sounded awfully messy.

Paint mitts work well for some applications but can be messy. Basically it is roller cover like material formed into a mitten.

I thought i'd go with a 2-3 roller and do the crooks and crannies with a brush. The deck is one of those plastic(?) composites,but i will still put a tarp down.

i would suggest applying the stain with the roller and then brushing over it all, both to coat what the roller misses and to make it all uniform.
