I installed a fan in my daughters bedroom. Set-up as dual switch. (Light and fan operated separately). Wall switch turns power on AND OFF. However she is not tall enough to control the lights with a pull chain when she wants the fan on. On wall switch there is one black and one red wire. White is pigtailed to another white wire. Can I add a switch that controls the fan and lights separately. How would I wire the devise ?

Thanks.

How are the two wires hooked up now? In this color situation, usually one wire controls the fan and the other the light. Need to know all the wires in the switch box and how they are hooked up.

OK. I hooked-up the ceiling fan as instructed. White to White. Black to Black. Black/white from fan to red from ceiling box.

At the wall switch, I see black and red connected to the terminal and white pigtailed to another white. A fan/light controller has 3 wires. How to connect ?

Thanks.

I am not meaning to be nitpicking, but you state the red and black in the switch box are connected to "the terminal". Only one terminal? There is never two wires under one screw on anything. What type switch was in the wall before you removed it? Was it a regular switch, or a double (over/under) switch?

Sorry for not being clear. It is a regular touch light switch. Red to one side, black to other side (terminal).
Thanks.

OK, as you have it, the red and black wires from the switch constitute a switch loop. Now let's move to the ceiling box. How many wires do you have in it? If I am right, you should have a white, 2 blacks, and a red, along with the ground (bare). Correct me if I am wrong.

Can anyone assist me with this problem ?

It is very likely that the one black wire you see in the switch box is two, where all you have to do is replace the switch that is there with a dual gang switch, the black from the two wire cable to common, red to the light switch, black to the fan switch.

Sorry, had to work (such a silly thing). Anyway, as you presently have it, it is possible the black and red in the ceiling box are energized via the switch. If you have the capability, separate the wires in the ceiling box and test them for power, and post back which one (or ones) are energized via the switch. We may be able to separate them at the switch. Is it possible for you to post a pix of the exploded switch box and the exploded ceiling box? Worth a thousand words.

There are 2 wall switches. One operates the ceiling fan and one the wall outlet. On the switch for the fan, black and red are pig-tailed with a wire to one side of the switch. Black wire on the other side of the switch is pig-tailed to 3 black wires with one going to the other wall outlet switch. Red wire (from outlet ?) goes directly to other side of wall outlet switch. All whites and grounds are pig-tailed.

Thanks.

LIke classicat states, you can probably separate the black and red that are pigtailed, and install a 2 gang switch, installing the black on one gold screw and the red on the other one. The hot wire should be connected to the black screw. It appears they tied the two together so they would work off one switch.
